New Year, New Home: Simple Home DIYs to Make Your House Feel Like New

There’s nothing like a fresh start for the New Year. While you might not be in the market for a whole new house, there are lots of ways to make your home feel fresh and new. It can be as simple as decluttering, cleaning, and organizing, or the handier crew might find joy in adding recessed lighting to part of their home. Whatever your DIY level may be, we’ve got lots of amazing ideas to give you a fresh new feel in your home. If that’s not enough, contact one of our realtors today to start looking for your new dream home!

For the beginner DIYers:

Rearrange your furniture

This is one of the simplest ways to get a fresh new feel in your home. Try a different arrangement of furniture, and while you’re at it, you can deep clean everything that’s been hiding under that couch! Start by choosing a focal point and a place for the TV (if applicable). Keep your furniture a few inches away from the walls, and double check that any rugs are the right size and placed well in the room.

Create styled arrangements

Is there a surface in your house that’s been driving you nuts? Maybe it’s your dresser, or your end table, or a shelf that’s been gathering junk. Nothing feels better than taking a moment to style an area that could use some love.

Bring in the plants

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love indoor plants. They really make a room feel more alive! Adding greenery is a great way to freshen up a space without much effort. Fresh flowers are also a way to add some color to a room, but will need to be replaced frequently.

Candles, and air fresheners, and diffusers- oh my!

A fresh scent can really brighten up a room. Grab some candles, air fresheners, wax warmers, or diffusers to make your rooms smell brand new!

Refresh your bookshelves

This is one of my very favorite DIYs to make things feel less cluttered and more beautiful. I find I need to do this every few months as things start cluttering up on my shelf again. To spice it up, try a different kind of organization system. I love sorting my books by color because it looks so pretty!

Hang up those photos you’ve been wanting to print

Photos personalize your space, fill up the walls, and are such a joyful way to show off your family all throughout the house. If you’ve been putting this project off, now is the time!

Replace your blinds and curtains

Has it been a while since you installed your blinds? Do your curtains need washing or replacing? There are so many windows in a house, you’d be surprised how much this helps brighten up a space.

Don’t forget the bathroom

Bathrooms are small spaces that are easy to update and make a big impact. We spend more time in the bathroom than we think. Grab some fresh towels, a new shower curtain, and some new rugs, or try installing a new medicine cabinet, mirror, or vanity to really make things pop.

For the more advanced DIYers:

Add some recessed lighting

Recessed lighting is all the rage and is a perfect way to refresh a kitchen, basement, or living space. If you have some experience with wiring, or can hire someone who does, this one will surely make any space feel new.

Install ceiling fans

This is another one you’ll need some electrical skills for, but the payoff is so worth it. Not only will ceiling fans help with heating and cooling your house, but there are also some really beautiful options from which to choose.

Build in some built-ins

Built-ins are one of the most refined and gorgeous storage systems. If you have woodworking skills, built-ins can add some style and luxury to your space and help with decluttering.

Build a bar or entertainment space

Have a finished basement or extra room you don’t know what to do with? Does your garage not get any use? Sounds like it might be time to build yourself a bar or entertainment area!

Spruce up your floors

Installing new flooring doesn’t just make a space look great, it also adds value to your home! There are lots of great options to be found at your local hardware store. There are even some easy floors that install by just snapping pieces together like a puzzle.

Panel your walls

Wall paneling is so luxurious and actually fairly easy to achieve. It completely transforms your room and can be customized to your tastes. Plus, you’ll end up with a fresh coat of paint on your walls as well.

Update your kitchen backsplash

With the right backsplash, you can create a really beautiful focal point in your kitchen. The backsplash can tie the whole room together. Your hardware store should have tons of beautiful options from which to choose so you’re sure to find something that fits your style.
